Candles without a flame flicker on the walls, telling a story of the soul that is once again finding its purpose and how it will shine ahead like a torch in the autumn night.
The world narrows down in front of me, as I sit to write the words of my story on paper as I’ve done so many times before. A steaming mug of dark, comforting coffee, and the steady scratch of a pen moving across paper as the nearby light guides my hand.
I’ve been here before, with napkins and keyboards and crinkling apparent of all kinds. For this moment, it’s a reporter’s notepad that’s sit unused on the shelves of my career, waiting for words as my next chapter unfolds.
This cup holds the weight of 20 years, capturing the sweat, the late nights, the deadlines met, and the stories chased.
It tastes like resilience, rich and dark, pulsing against a soundtrack born of another era. Eighties monster ballads of my childhood, hinting at a soundtrack that is timeless but often loudest in the witching hours. They echo the rhythm of my soul as much as the written words do.
Those songs are the heartbeat of a life spent watching, listening, and recording the world. Now, the music swells to fill the silence of a new kind of unknown.
For the first time in two decades, the familiar comfort of the daily writing grind has given way to the vast, open expanse of a job search abyss. It’s a strange, quiet vertigo, standing at the edge of a cliff where the safety net has dissolved, staring into the swirling dark.
In that darkness, I search for a light. A light shining like a candle through my words, a splash of cream in the coffee before it fades into the background.
And so the pen becomes a torch, scribbling spontaneous sentences onto scattered napkins while caffeinated conversation carries the creative spirit forward.
The paved roads of Indiana and Michigan stretch remotely out into the world through the Internet, branching out before me like digital veins connecting past memories to future miles.
Every pen stroke across the page is an act of defiance against the uncertainty, a way of mapping out a soul that refuses to be silenced.
My words spill out not just as ink, but as raw, unfiltered truth of a storyteller who has spent a lifetime giving voice to others, finding a journalist's fire within once again.
The future is unwritten, blank and intimidating.
But as the music plays on and the flawless battery candles burn low in the room, my fire remains. It’s the unyielding spark of journalistic passion, a stubborn heartbeat of a writer who knows that no matter how deep the shadows get, the story is still being written.
My next chapter is being written, through handwritten penmanship and candles and coffee and red wine and music.
Tomorrow’s story begins now, here.
